Car Service and Oil Changes: When and Why
Car servicing is one of those things that's easy to postpone. The car still runs, so why bother?
Because the cost of skipping services compounds. Small problems become big problems. Warranties get voided. Resale value drops.
Service Intervals
Modern cars: Most manufacturers recommend servicing every 12 months or 10,000-15,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Oil changes: Varies by oil type and driving conditions.
- Conventional oil: 3,000-5,000 miles
- Synthetic oil: 7,500-15,000 miles
- Check your owner's manual for specifics
Older cars: May need more frequent attention. If your car is over 10 years old, consider 6-monthly checks.
What Happens at a Service
Basic service (annual):
- Oil and filter change
- Fluid top-ups (coolant, brake, power steering, washer)
- Tyre pressure and condition check
- Brake inspection
- Light and signal check
- Battery test
Full service (every 2 years or 24,000 miles):
- Everything above, plus:
- Air filter replacement
- Fuel filter replacement
- Spark plugs (petrol engines)
- More detailed brake inspection
- Suspension check
Major service (every 4 years or 48,000 miles):
- Everything above, plus:
- Transmission fluid
- Coolant flush
- Timing belt (if applicable - critical)
The Cost of Skipping
Skipped oil changes: Engine wear accelerates. Eventually, engine failure. Cost: £3,000-8,000 for replacement.
Skipped timing belt: If it snaps, the engine destroys itself. Cost: Often more than the car is worth.
Skipped brake checks: Worn pads damage rotors. Cost: £150 for pads becomes £400+ for pads and rotors.
Warranty Implications
Most manufacturer warranties require servicing at specified intervals. Skip a service, void the warranty. Keep all receipts.
You don't have to use the dealer - any reputable garage can service your car without affecting the warranty (in the UK and EU, this is legally protected).
When to Book
Book your service 2-4 weeks before it's due. Good garages fill up, especially before MOT season.
Add car service to your tasks. Confirm it when done, and we'll remind you when it's time to book again.
